One of the four groups commissioned in 1698 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart (1646-1708), superintendent of the King's Buildings, with Amphitrite (RF 3005), its counterpart, Neptune (RF 3006), and La Marne (RF 3007). Models executed in 1698-1699. Casting of plaster models carried out in 1699 on the locations provided for the marbles. Execution in marble started in 1702, once the Mercure (MR 1822) and La Renommée (MR 1824) were completed; according to the inventory of the royal collections of 1707 which places them in the park of Marly, executed in 1706. Perfect payment, April 18, 1712. The Seine is intended by Alexandre Lenoir for the Museum of French Monuments, October 12, 1796, but probably placed in the gardens of the Corps Législatif (current Palais-Bourbon). Placed in 1801 at the Château de Saint-Cloud, Trois Bouillons carpet. Entry into the Louvre to be restored by Julien Dubois (1806-1891), March 6, 1872.
