The Dahlia is a genus of herbaceous, tuberous perennial flowering plants native to Mexico and Central America. Its garden relatives thus include the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum, and zinnia. They can grow from a range of 12 inches to 8 ft tall. There are 42 species of dahlia, with hybrids commonly grown as garden plants. Dahlias also contain many transposons—genetic pieces that move from place to place upon an allele—which contributes to their manifesting such great diversity. It is the national flower of Mexico, and the tubers are edible, historically being grown as food crops by the ancient Aztecs.
