Tsuga Canadensis: Eastern Hemlock Tsuga Canadensis is a coniferous tree native to eastern North America. It is the state tree of Pennsylvania. Eastern Hemlock grows well in shade and is very long lived, with the oldest recorded specimen, found in Tionesta, Pennsylvania, being at least 554 years old. The tree generally reaches heights of about 90 ft, but some have been known to climb to heights of 175 ft. The wood is soft, coarse-grained, and light buff in color, and the lumber is often used for general construction, crates, and railroad ties. Eastern hemlock is generally confined to areas with highland climates, with cool and humid conditions. The species is currently threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgid, a sap-sucking bug introduced from East Asia to the United States in 1924, which is rapidly altering the carbon cycle of its native forests.
