The AIM-120 is the Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile or AMRAAM. It was designed to replace Sparrow and Pheonix missile systems. It is a BVR beyond visual range air to air missile using active transpit and receive radar guidance instead of the semi-active only radar guidance. It is a fire and forget upgrade to the previous missile systems. It also was designed with at 7 inch diameter body rather than an 8” diameter body of previous missiles.
