The Chauchat was a machine gun/ automatic rifle made in the year 1915, shooting the 8mm Lebel cartridge. This weapon had a capacity of 20 rounds, far exceeding most rifles at the time. Over 600,000 of them were produced, thanks to the simple design and low cost. Those costs came at a price, as the weapon was unreliable and not ergonomic in the slightest. The 1918 Chauchat was a variant made for the United States Army, swapping 8mm Lebel for 30-06 Springfield; this version was even more unreliable.
