DESCRIPTION

An extrusion dummy block is a critical tool steel component that acts as a buffer between the press ram (or stem) and the heated billet. For a 10-inch specification, the block is designed to operate within a 10-inch diameter container to force alloy through the die while maintaining a precise seal.

Core Function & DesignThe primary job of the dummy block is to transmit the full force of the ram—often thousands of tons—to the billet without allowing the metal to back-extrude.

Expansion Mechanism: Modern 10-inch blocks are typically fixed, expanding blocks. Under pressure, the outer ring of the block expands slightly to create a tight seal against the container wall, preventing flash (leaked aluminum) from bypassing the block.

Contamination Control: It is designed to leave a thin skull or shell of oxidized material against the container wall. This ensures that the surface impurities of the billet are not pushed into the final extruded product.

Venting: To prevent air entrapment (which causes blisters in the finished profile), these blocks often feature high-flow venting systems that allow air to escape as the block enters the container and begins the compression cycle.
