DESCRIPTION

Impact Crater Terrain - Arizona Meteorite Crater USA: real-world terrain tile of 2,496 x 2,496 m with 187 m of relief, built from USGS lidar (1 m) and draped with a USDA aerial photograph. Made for aerial and medium-distance shots: flyovers, establishing shots, documentary, education and presentation backdrops.

What you get

  • Blender 4.5 file (main product): LOD1 visible, LOD2 and LOD3 in hidden collections, and a Render Setup collection with a camera, a sun matched to the shadows in the aerial photo, a procedural sky and haze. Press F12 to render the first preview image. No HDRI or third-party assets inside.
  • FBX, OBJ, USD and GLB of LOD1-LOD3; every archive works on its own.
  • Optional full-resolution LOD0 (2 m grid, 1,557,504 quads) as FBX in its own archive.
  • 8K PBR maps: aerial BaseColor, procedural BaseColor (lighting-free alternative), Roughness, and a Normal map baked for each LOD. A 4K set and a 16-bit heightmap come in a separate archive.
  • A README in every archive with units, contents, limitations and credits.

Specifications

  • LOD0: 2 m grid, 1,557,504 quads, 1,560,001 vertices
  • LOD1: 4 m grid, 389,376 quads, 390,625 vertices
  • LOD2: 8 m grid, 97,344 quads, 97,969 vertices
  • LOD3: 16 m grid, 24,336 quads, 24,649 vertices
  • Real-world scale in metres, origin at the centre of the footprint and the lowest point, identity transforms, one object and one material per LOD. Distances are UTM grid distances; true ground distances are 0.07 % longer.
  • 8192 px maps: one texel = 0.30 m on the ground. Normal maps are OpenGL convention (flip green for DirectX software such as Unreal Engine).
  • UVs: one planar, non-overlapping map shared by all LODs.

Viewing distance and limitations

  • Built for aerial and medium distance. One 8K texel covers one pixel of a 1920 px frame at about 627 m; closer than that the ground gets soft. Ground-level close-ups need your own detail. The medium and low-altitude previews show the file as delivered.
  • Height field: one height per position. No overhangs or vertical faces; steep walls have stretched quads and stretched top-down texture.
  • The aerial BaseColor is a photograph (2023-06-27) and contains that day's sun shadows. The procedural map is the lighting-free alternative.
  • Elevation from lidar collected 2023-05-28 to 2023-09-05; the aerial photo was taken at a different date.
  • The crater is on private land. This model is built only from public USGS and USDA data and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the operator of the site.
  • Bare-earth surface as surveyed; later changes on site are not included. Grid spacing is not positional accuracy: a visual asset, not survey data.
  • The procedural BaseColor and the Roughness map are a designed palette placed by terrain rules, not measured colour.

Checked before upload

  • Every archive was extracted to an empty folder and every file reimported in Blender 4.5: face counts, real-world size within 1 cm, UVs and texture links (14 of 14 files passed).
  • FBX imported in 3ds Max 2027 with default settings: correct real-world size (2,496 x 2,496 m), all faces, textures found through the relative paths.
  • In a centimetre scene Max shows the unit conversion as object scale 100; Reset XForm bakes it if you need scale 1.
  • Max loads every bitmap with gamma 2.2: set the Normal and Roughness bitmaps to gamma override 1.0.
  • Not tested in Maya, Cinema 4D, Unreal Engine or Unity.

No unsupported objects
Unsupported objects:
- Lights
- Cameras
Learn more
Geometry
No N-gons
N-gons are polygons with five or more sides which might cause issues in certain processes like rendering or animation. Learn more
No faceted geometry
Faceted geometry uses flat surfaces without smoothing, which can look unrealistic on curves.
Learn more
Manifold geometry
Manifold geometry ensures all surfaces are properly connected, avoiding issues like edges shared by more than two faces.

Textures & material
PBR textures
PBR textures simulate how light interacts with materials, making the model look realistic under different lighting.
Required PBR textures:
- Base Color
- Roughness
- Metalness
- Normal
Learn more
No embed textures
Embedded textures are stored inside the model file, increasing its size and sometimes causing compatibility issues.
Learn more
Square textures
Texture aspect ratio is the width-to-height ratio of a texture. Expected texture aspect ratio: 1:1
Learn more
Power of 2 texture sizes
Textures with dimensions in power of two (e.g. 512x512px, 1024x1024px) are used to optimize performance and memory usage.
Learn more
Assigned materials
Materials are applied to the 3D model to allow visualize a model's surface properties and appearance.
Learn more
UVs & naming
No UV overlaps
UVs overlap when multiple points on the 3D model's surface are mapped to the same point on the UV island causing texture stretching.
Learn more
UV unwrapped model
A UV unwrapped model means its 3D surface is flattened into 2D space, allowing textures to be applied accurately.
