The Ship-Prow Tortoise was used by legionaries during siege against hill towns, to protect troops from heavy objects rolled downhill: tree trunks, boulders, wagons and barrels.

It was used in combination with a wood and branches fence system, to defend deep ditches [1.5 m] were the soldiers could gather, before reaching the inner section of the tortoise where they stayed safe crowded, until the moment of the direct attack.

The Wood and Branches Fence System was used also independently to protect the ditches.
