DESCRIPTION

RV01 is a high-detail mechanical humanoid robot made for VFX, animation, cinematics, and commercial projects.

If you don't like reading long text, no problem! You can watch the preview video above. I explain everything about the RV01 model, rigging, animation, project files, and workflows there.

RV01 is not only a high-detail robot model. It also comes with an advanced mechanical rigging system for realistic mechanical movement. Most of the mechanical parts are connected with a universal joint system, and many parts like pistons, chains, and other mechanical parts are connected to the rig and move together with the controls.

The project also includes different workflows for animation, motion capture, exporting, Blender, and Unreal Engine.

Main Features

  • Production quality hero model
  • 28 sets of 4K PBR UDIM textures
  • 878 joints
  • Advanced mechanical rigging system
  • IK / FK controls for arms and legs
  • Finger IK / FK controls
  • Advanced foot roll controls
  • Automatic mechanical movement controls
  • Customizable robot colors and roughness
  • Customizable eye color and brightness
  • Proxy Version for smoother animation
  • Mixamo Ready Version
  • Motion Capture Retargeting Version
  • Rokoko Ready example
  • Clean FBX export workflow
  • Alembic workflow for animated eyelids

MAYA PROJECT

The main Maya project includes the Main Model, Proxy Model, Mixamo Ready Version, Motion Capture Retargeting Version, export joints, selection sets, display layers, and other necessary files.

  • The Main Model is the high-detail version for final rendering and production.
  • The Proxy Model is made for animating. Since the Main Model can be heavy in some cases, animators can use the Proxy Version for smoother animation and then apply the animation to the Main Model.
  • Both workflows work exactly the same because the controls and export joints are identical in both versions.
  • The Mixamo Ready Version allows you to easily retarget Mixamo animations to the RV01 controls.
  • The Motion Capture Retargeting Version can be prepared for different motion capture systems. A Rokoko Ready example is also included to show how this workflow works.

ANIMATION & EXPORT

  • RV01 is designed with a clean animation export workflow.
  • Normally, we can export the character and skeleton first and then export different animation FBX files using the same skeleton. This workflow works well with Unreal Engine and other 3D software.
  • The provided example FBX animations can also be used to test the exported character.
  • For the animated eyelids, we use a separate Alembic (.abc) export because the eyelids use live Boolean geometry.
  • A separate tutorial is included to explain how to properly export and use the animated eyelids.

UNREAL ENGINE & BLENDER

  • A prepared Unreal Engine project is included with the RV01 model, textures, and necessary materials already rebuilt inside Unreal Engine.
  • A prepared Blender project is also included with the necessary materials for the model.
  • You don't need to rebuild everything from the beginning. The provided projects are already prepared and ready to test the RV01 animation.

Color Customizable Material

  • RV01 also includes a customizable color material setup.
  • In Maya, you can easily adjust the robot's color, roughness, eye color, brightness, and dust effect.
  • The necessary masks are also included in the texture package so the same color customization method can be rebuilt in other software or game engines.
  • A short tutorial is included to explain how to rebuild this material inside Unreal Engine.

TUTORIALS

I also included short tutorial videos to explain the main workflows:

  • Main RV01 Project Walkthrough — 17 min
  • Motion Capture Retargeting — 9 min
  • Color Customizable Material in Unreal Engine — 4 min
  • How to Properly Export Eyelids — 5 min
  • Proxy Workflow for Smooth Animation — 2 min

These videos explain how the provided files work and how to use the different workflows.

RECOMMENDED USE

RV01 is mainly made for:

  • VFX
  • Cinematics
  • Animation
  • Commercial projects
  • High-quality renders
  • Motion capture projects
  • Unreal Engine projects
  • Blender projects

Because the Main Model is very high detail, it is not recommended for normal game projects. The Proxy Version is provided to make the animation process easier and smoother.

Final Note

I made RV01 as a complete production asset, not only as a high-detail robot model. I tried to prepare the rigging, animation, export workflow, materials, Blender and Unreal Engine projects, and tutorial videos so you can start working with the model more easily.

I hope you enjoy working with RV01!

No unsupported objects
Unsupported objects:
- Lights
- Cameras
Learn more
Geometry
No N-gons
N-gons are polygons with five or more sides which might cause issues in certain processes like rendering or animation. Learn more
No faceted geometry
Faceted geometry uses flat surfaces without smoothing, which can look unrealistic on curves.
Learn more
Manifold geometry
Manifold geometry ensures all surfaces are properly connected, avoiding issues like edges shared by more than two faces.

Textures & material
PBR textures
PBR textures simulate how light interacts with materials, making the model look realistic under different lighting.
Required PBR textures:
- Base Color
- Roughness
- Metalness
- Normal
Learn more
No embed textures
Embedded textures are stored inside the model file, increasing its size and sometimes causing compatibility issues.
Learn more
Square textures
Texture aspect ratio is the width-to-height ratio of a texture. Expected texture aspect ratio: 1:1
Learn more
Power of 2 texture sizes
Textures with dimensions in power of two (e.g. 512x512px, 1024x1024px) are used to optimize performance and memory usage.
Learn more
Assigned materials
Materials are applied to the 3D model to allow visualize a model's surface properties and appearance.
Learn more
UVs & naming
No UV overlaps
UVs overlap when multiple points on the 3D model's surface are mapped to the same point on the UV island causing texture stretching.
Learn more
UV unwrapped model
A UV unwrapped model means its 3D surface is flattened into 2D space, allowing textures to be applied accurately.
