The Chunhyangjeon is one of Korea’s most iconic stories. Although its author and date of composition are unknown, it most likely originated as a work of pansori, a form of musical storytelling involving song and percussion, and was later adapted into prose during the reign of either King Sukjong (r. 1674–1720) or King Yeongjo (r. 1724–1776). The classic love story has since been rendered into several films, plays and other dramatic forms. Multiple versions exist, but they all adhere to the same basic plot. (Source - Korea.net)

• ChunHyang (Korea Joseon Woman) - 27,106 tri: Chunhyang is the female protagonist of the story, renowned for her beauty, intelligence, and unwavering fidelity. As the daughter of a kisaeng (a female entertainer), she falls in love with Lee Mongryong, a nobleman’s son. Despite the challenges she faces, including imprisonment and threats from the villain, she remains steadfastly loyal to Mongryong, exemplifying the virtues of love and fidelity.
• MongRyong (Korea Joseon Male Noble) - 22,940 tri: Mongryong is the male protagonist, a nobleman’s son who falls deeply in love with Chunhyang. He is characterized by his righteousness, courage, and dedication to Chunhyang. When he is called to serve in the capital, he promises to return and marry her. Upon learning of Chunhyang’s plight, he returns to rescue her and punish the corrupt official, demonstrating his commitment to justice and love.
• Satto (Korea Joseon Male Officer) - 27,184 tri: Byeon Hakdo is the antagonist of the story, a corrupt and lecherous magistrate who tries to force Chunhyang to become his concubine while Mongryong is away. His abuse of power and cruel treatment of Chunhyang highlight the themes of corruption and moral decay within the ruling class. He ultimately faces retribution when Mongryong returns and exposes his misdeeds.
