About Allosaurus

Allosaurus is a type of dinosaur called a therapod. This dinosaur lived about 155 million years ago—during the Jurassic Period—and probably lived in parts of the Western United States. It was first discovered in 1869 by Ferdinand Hayden and was later named in 1877 by Othniel Charles Marsh. It was named using the Greek words “allos”, which meant different, and “saurus” which meant lizard. Therefore, it’s name literally means “different lizard”. It was given this name because its skeleton was quite different than any other dinosaur found up until the time of its discovery.

Although most of the specimens of this dinosaur have been found in Colorado and Montana, there have been an increasing number of specimens found elsewhere. These include specimens found in New Mexico, Africa, Australia. Tanzania and parts of Europe.

This dinosaur was a large carnivorous bipedal predator that scientists believe preyed on the many herbivores of the time. This conclusion has been reached in part by the number of razor sharp teeth that can be found in this predator’s mouth. It had rows of razor sharp teeth that had saw-like formations on its edges. It is believed that the Allosaurus was able to attack larger predators with these teeth by using its upper jaw like a hatchet and attacking using the element of surprise.

One interesting fact to note is that the largest Allosaurus specimens may have rivaled the T- Rex in size. The size of the largest Allosaurus is approximately 16 feet tall, 43 feet long and weighed more up to 5 tons. This contrasts pretty well with the T- Rex who was approximately 13-16 feet tall, 42 feet long and weighed approximately 7 tons.

About Deinocheirus

Deinocheirus was one of the most mysterious dinosaurs to have ever been found by paleontologists. It was originally found in 1965 in Southern Mongolia—actually, not the whole dinosaur was found but only its gigantic hands. And for the next 50 years, that is all that scientists would have of this elusive dinosaur. That is probably why its name means “terrible hand”.

That changed in 2012, when 3 paleontologists—Phil Bell, Yuong- Nam Lee and Philip J. Currie—discovered 2 new specimens that would reveal all of the secrets that this dinosaur once held. Secrets of its size and what it is believed to have eaten. Up until that point, the only thing that was really known about this dinosaur was that it had massive hands and lived about 70 million years ago during the late Cretaceous Period.

Deinocheirus was around 30 feet long, almost 15 feet high and weighed about 6 tons. It was a bipedal dinosaur—from a species called Ornithomimids, which are sometimes called ‘ostrich dinosaurs’ and was the biggest of these dinosaurs. However, it probably didn’t move like an ostrich. Due to its large size and weight, it more than likely lumbered along and didn’t run very quickly. I

It is believed that this dinosaur was a scavenger of sorts. It is believed to have eaten a variety of different things such as fish, invertebrates, plants and maybe even insects. It probably didn’t hunt prey like a predator. However, an interesting fact about this dinosaur is that it was probably frequently hunted by tyrannosaurus dinosaurs, as bite marks on its skeleton would suggest.

About Anchisaurus

Anchisaurus was originally named Megadactylus polyzelus by Edward Hitchcock‭; ‬however after his death it was realised that that Megadactylus had already been used to name another creature,‭ ‬and so it could not be used.‭ ‬Later in‭ ‬1885,‭ ‬the famous American palaeontologists Othniel Charles Marsh renamed the fossils Anchisaurus,‭ ‬as well as identifying the remains as being those of a dinosaur.‭ The exact classification of Anchisaurus has long been a subject of debate,‭ ‬with some sources labelling it as a prosauropod,‭ ‬while later thinking places it as a sauropodomorph.‭ ‬Additionally another genus called Ammosaurus has been regularly speculated to be the same dinosaur as Anchisaurus even though there are some differences in the pelvis and hind feet between these two genera.‭ ‬Regardless of its exact placement,‭ ‬Anchisaurus is a representative of the kinds of dinosaurs that would steadily grow bigger and become the quadrupedal sauropods of the later Jurassic. The blunt teeth and jaw construction of Anchisaurus have been interpreted as clear signs that Anchisaurus was a plant eating dinosaur.‭ ‬Additionally the body is shaped to allow for an increased gut area for the digestion of plant matter.‭ ‬Some palaeontologists have speculated however that Anchisaurus may have eaten meat since the eyes still face partially forward rather than to the sides like most plant eating animals that are usually prey for meat eaters.‭ ‬Additionally the‭ ‘‬thumb‭’ ‬digit‭ (‬actually a reversible first digit‭) ‬had a claw sharpened beyond that necessary for a herbivore.‭ ‬However what is certain is that dinosaurs like Anchisaurus were descended from meat eating ancestors,‭ ‬and with this in mind it is reasonable to speculate that the partially carnivorous/predatory features present in Anchisaurus may just be relict features that were yet to evolve out.
