The Gloster Javelin was the last aircraft to bear the name of Gloster. It was introduced in the mid 1950s as a subsonic all-weather night interceptor to defend the British Isles from bomber attack. It was upgraded several times over its lifetime including engines, radar and weapons. The Hjavelin was designed to fill the need for anti USSR soviet bombers potentially attacking the British Isles. These aircraft were withdrawn from service in 1968 when the British Electric Lighting was so much more capable than the Javelin.
