The “Ranger” is a spacecraft from the science fiction film Interstellar (2014), directed by Christopher Nolan. It is one of the main vehicles used by the astronauts during their mission through space near Saturn and the black hole Gargantua.

In the movie, the Ranger is designed as a versatile shuttle craft. It is used for transporting astronauts between larger spacecraft, planets, and space stations. The Ranger also reflects one of Interstellar’s major themes: realism. The film’s spacecraft were designed with input from physicist Kip Thorne to make them feel scientifically plausible. Rather than relying on magical technology, the ships appear to operate according to real principles of thrust, inertia, fuel use, and gravity.

Visually, the Ranger has a clean white and gray exterior with a rugged industrial style. Its shape is often compared to a cross or an “X” because of the arrangement of its engines and wings. The design became popular among science-fiction fans because it feels functional and believable, as though it could genuinely exist in the future.

For people unfamiliar with Interstellar, the Ranger can be thought of as the crew’s multi-purpose exploration shuttle — a realistic spacecraft built not for war or luxury, but for survival, planetary exploration, and difficult missions in deep space.
