AH-64 armed helicopter is the product of advanced armed helicopter program (Aah) put forward in 1973. Before the AAH program, the U.S. Army carried out the advanced air fire support system (AAFSS) program, but the program was too ambitious. After a lengthy and expensive research and development process, it was cancelled on August 9, 1972. The US Army reviewed the reasons for its failure and soon put forward a practical alternative, namely AAH.
