DESCRIPTION

In 1958, after the mass production of the J-6 fighter, the Chinese version of the Soviet MiG-19, the PLA Air Force proposed the demand intention of the next generation fighter to the national aviation design department. In 1960, the technical team led by chief engineer Lu Xiaopeng completed the design of the whole machine. Unfortunately, the political turmoil delayed the manufacture of the prototype, and it was not until 1965 that the prototype successfully flew for the first time.In June 1965, after the first flight in Nanchang factory, the prototype aircraft code named Xiongying 302 was officially named qiang-5. After more tests, the military decided to mass produce the aircraft in 1969, and the production model qiang-5 was officially put into service in 1970.About 100 qiang-5 basic models were produced, and the production lasted from 1970 to the 1980s. In the follow-up, more than 1300 qiang-5 basic models went off the production line and served until the 21st century. Besides China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sudan have all been equipped with this type of fighter.
