After Exporting an Object From Blender, It Loses All Of Its Materials' Properties

Discussion started by themikeman

I'm not completely sure if this is the right forum to ask questions, but I have been having a problem with exporting a 3D model that I want to sell on this website. I have it all made with textures and materials, but when I import it in another file after exporting it, all of the materials are still there, but they are all gray and do not have any of the properties that I assigned to them. Is there any way to carry the materials in my original blend file over to the export so that I can upload it?

Hi,
After the export, in the other program, did you make a test render? It's usual stay in gray, but the mats are there. If is not the case, could you give more information? software, render engine, export format...?

I export the model from Blender and then I import it in another Blender start-up file to test if it works. I did make a test render and everything was still gray. All of the material names from the exported file are imported and listed in the materials tab, but the materials themselves are gray. I use cycles render and I have tested fbx, Collada, and obj export formats, all yielding the same results. This is what the imported file looks like: http://imgur.com/KDUGg9a

Not all interchange formats support materials and other advanced features. And even those that does, have significant limitations on what can be transfered. The only formats that guarantee that your model will transfer exactly as it is, are native ones. In case of Blender, it's BLEND format. FBX, OBJ, COLLADA supports materials, but that support is quite limited, especially in case of OBJ.
