Selling models - Question

Discussion started by xile3d

Hello

I would like to offer my models on cgtraders and wanted to ask a few more questions because i didn't find any exact answers.

1. The images uploaded to the product, which software renders are allowed? Can I also render the images in Daz3D or Substance Painter or Marmoset or do I have to render them in the program where the product is sold e.g. 3DMAX?

2. Models offered for free on CGTrader, can these models be used and sold in one set? For example I create a kitchen and download some free forks and glasses and add them to my kitchen model. Can I sell the kitchen model complete with all free models included or do I have to remove the free models?

3. At "Royalty Free License" it says that you are not allowed to resell the model in the form it was downloaded. As an example, does this mean that if I download a car and remove the mirrors, delete the lights and create my own lights, remove the number plates and completely retexture the car, I can offer it as a new model under my name? Or how much do you have to change to make it acceptable to offer it again?

4. Should the above questions be answered with yes and i am allowed to reuse free models in a set, do i have to write in the readme or in a general file from whom i took which models with name / url?

Thank you very much for all replies

Best regards

Hi!
#1. you can render previews in any software that you want. It is preferable to mention render program in description, especially if the model was made not in the same software.

#2. absolutely NOT! You can't resell any models that aren't belong to you, no matter if that model is free or if you paid for it. There are only few exceptions - you can resell model if you aquired exclusive rights to the model or if the model was obtained under public domain licence. Such models are very rare, so it's pretty safe to say that you can't resell any model that you've downloaded from cgtrader or from anywhere else.

#3. same as #2 - you can't resell models obtained under royalty free licence, no matter how much or how little you have modified it. By the law, you can't put on sale your model if it contains even single polygon from models mentioned above. Royalty free doesn't mean that the model is free to use whatever you may please - it simply means that you don't have to pay royalties to the author any single time you use the model (in allowed manner).

All those statements are exactly valid for textures and other digital assets as well.

Have a nice festives season!

yes, please dont distribute models you purchased to others. I just found one of my models on Steam that someone was giving away for free to use in a video game....every person that downloaded it is a lost customer for me, Yes you can use it in your video game, but not if its downloadable to others. It was a very old model so i was not fully concerned, but at the same time who knows to how many people the exact same thing happend to.
