Importing textured models into c4d

Discussion started by enequest

Hi, can anyone advise how or if you can import textures into C4D using FBX, mtl, obj, rar or dae?

I'm new to buying models and understand it's a good way forward if I could use them to the full extent.

Thanks

After you have ingested the video information if you want documentation to refer back to at any point this is a great resource. I use this when setting up materials for Cinema4D for all my models that I sell.

Hi 3DCargo, thanks for your reply. Very helpful. Looks like I'll be making my own textures as sounds like there's no quick conversion, or way of importing the model with texture from these files.

Enequest you can always ask to the buyer if he can export them for c4d if he used substance painter or Mudbox it will take him 5 minutes it shouldn't be a problem

Did you watch that video you posted @modelsdesign? Im not sure if the OP is using vectorworks.

Most models these days require an understanding of PBR texture maps. If you can understand this workflow then creating other materials should be easier for you. This should get you headed in the right direction.

Correct, if the seller didn't include the textures in an embedded OBJ/FBX file they will need to be manually placed in a material then applied to your object. Even if they are embedded they will not appear correctly for your render engine as they use legacy material formats. Usually the textures should be included in a texture folder or rar/zip package - if there is no textures provided then you will have to source your own.

This is why I provided you the above tutorials, this will give you a basic understanding of what textures go into what slots for your material (Diffuse/Reflection etc). Once you understand how each texture affects the material you can confidently create each material for your geometry object.

Also note that if the model you purchased did not come with any textures or is just grey in the preview, you will have to either check the details or contact the seller first to ensure the geometry is UV mapped and ready for texture stage. If not then you have a lot more learning to do.
