How long did it take for you to make a living in the 3D industry?

Discussion started by squallraziel

Hi! I would like to open a thread aimed to all 3d professionals (in any field) that make a living in this industry (in any way, not only selling models in marketplaces). Especially I would like to know how much time passed since you started your formation as artists, designers, architects, etc, I mean, not in 3d, but since you began to acquire an artistic or technical base in any field (either academically or self-taught), and the moment that you started to make a living in the 3d industry. The thing is that I have read a lot of similar threads (asking how much time needed to master 3d, etc), but I have never seen one that raises the subject this way, and because of that I would like all those who want tell your story here (a brief summary of it, of course).

PD: I would also appreciate it if you share any link to any thread very similar to this (if you know someone:-)

I am somewhat new to the 3D world as I've only been doing 3D design work for about 2 years. I've learnt a lot in those 2 years and am soon off to university to study more in 3D design and animation.

I don't know if I have an answer to how long it would take to earn a living from being a 3D designer but from this website and also small jobs I do from people I meet on this site, I earn enough to go out and do things I wanna do. In terms of earning a living its for sure up to a 6 year commitment depending on how easy you pick it up. I've been quite lucky and been able to have access to programs others can maybe afford such as Substance Painter.

Regardless how long it takes to earn a living or if I even will, I plan on modelling for as long as I can as I just love doing it.

I'm also curious about what squallraziel asked.

I have an additional question for 3D professionals, too. What are your opinions on doing freelance/ commission work versus working for a company? Is most 3D design work done by freelance professionals?

'Im not a professional but hear me out' I do currently do freelance work for people who have offers and I enjoy it very much. I know people who work for a company doing 3D design who also enjoy it very much its just a matter of whether you prefer a constant income or income when you can get it, but it also depends on if you can get the work. As I've recently studied into 3D design for companies I can tell you that many companies do hire freelancers to make models for them if they need extra hands. Big AAA title companies most likely have more than enough people to not need to however smaller companies will ask for freelancers to work as it is also cheaper for them to do so.

Thank you for your answers, Beckstation, but it would be nice to hear from people who generate all of their income solely from 3D design and have been in the industry 5 - 10+ year. I love the input, but your opinions are not much different than my own. Please let someone qualified to answer tackle some of these questions and we can all learn something :)
