archive your model in a flat file structure

Discussion started by iris-manta

Hello friends,

It is my first time here and I want to upload my first model. I saw the requirements and it says ''archive your model in a flat file structure''. What does it means ?

Thanks in advance

It just means put your files into a ZIP and don't have any unnecessary subfolders. I personally have a subfolder for my textures as it makes more sense that way. If you have only the model file and no textures, you can just upload the model file directly without worrying about zipping it.

Thank you :) Yes I have textures. So I make a main folder that includes, rendered images, the model zipped in different formats and also a zipped subfolder for the textures, right ?

I have a zip file inside which are the models in a specific format, eg .fbx, a subfolder called "maps" and inside that subfolder I have all the textures. I have a separate zip for different file formats so I can load them separately and the customer can choose which format they want to download. I hope that makes sense.

Yes thanks, understood. And another question sorry :) Maybe it is a stupid question... When the customer opens the folder, for example I use blender and I open as a customer the folder. I find inside the blender file and I open it. The textures then are recognised automatically like when we open the file in our computer ?

I'm not really sure of that. But if you save your files with relative paths for the textures, and you keep the same folder structure in the zip file as you have on your HD, then it should work.

I would say archive them as your customer would need them.
In some cases you have no option anyway (e.g. if you make stuff for DAZ Studio you must keep the folder structure and the fit naming rules or your customer won't get your product to work after unzipping).
That's why I do unzipping and testing if everything works on another computer before uploading (quick and easy to do mistakes I wouldn't realize otherwise).
