3D Retopology service

Discussion started by Mciracer

I see far too many dense character meshes in the marketplace, 3D retopology isn't hard just tedious and time consuming.
Understandably some people don't want to do it either way so i started a service to make it fast and easy.

3DRetop.com

Rigging available as well on request.

Yes that is so true! Bad topology messes up 3D prints like you wouldn't believe! I thought bad geometry and super high poly meshes were only bad for games and animation projects. I was wrong! They are very bad for 3D printing too especially if you are running large models. Sometimes the printer does not know what to do with the odd bad topology info and scrambles your print. Other times it just makes the process so slow since it takes forever to resize scale or do any mods to the mesh and even crashes the software.

High poly meshes in animations are perfectly fine. As they are rendered from certain views and cameras and not in real-time like a video game. And even video games can use high amounts of polys now, considering the rate the technology is developing. Big games use around 80-100K polys per character. That's a lot of polys for a character! As for 3D print, the less information the printer has to read, the better the result. So low poly for printing is the way forward.

How much do you charge for the retopoloy of something like a car? 200.000 polys to re topo it to something small enough to work in a game like 10.000 polys?

It depends on the complexity for the cars form. We retop mechanical models to be one piece with topology for subdivision where necessary. So if you have allot of holes and complex curves it'll be more of an effort.

I personally use TOPOGUN. It is a very easy to use and very affordable ($ 100) I used it for one of my last model (baby dragon) the result is very powerful

@beckstation Thank a lot :) I spent 3-4 hours of retopology work for this model (and the same time for uvw mapping :) )

Please post a link to your dragon model here. I would love to see it!

Cool! Can you make a quick video tutorial of how it works? If it is good and I can figure out how it works based on your video I think I will buy it. I have been using 3D coat for now... but my trial version expired... I think maybe 3D coat is more expensive.

Beckstation, you are right the high poly meshes are fine for animation but only if you do not plan to have them move and they are being uses as backgrounds... Generally speaking the high poly meshes especially the ones with mixed triangles or odd faces cause all kinds of issues. Right now I have been working with 3D printing a lot and the high poly meshes are horrible. They mess up my prints or make the printing process so much slower. The biggest issue is some people don't build their models from scratch anymore making sure that the grid is done properly. It is sad because then whenever I buy model like that I end up having to ask for a refund and can't print it which wastes plastic and time.

So many people buy 3D printers these days and think they got a lemon or that it is a faulty printer and part of the reason is they bought some badly made models and it messed up their printers. That is why I am doing my best to build my 3D printable models with good geometry and also trying to make sure that they do not require any support to print because that also saves on plastic cleaning and time. I am testing all my models before I try selling them and making sure I document issues etc... to make them a sure thing and work right out of the box.
