Everyone of us have certainly tried to imagine how the world will look in the future. People love to talk about it but the painful truth(for some!) is - only a very few can depict their imagination in 3D. Meet Herminio Nieves - a man with great talent to immortalize his fantasies in the graphic world.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got into the 3D industry?

Hi I’m Herminio Nieves and I am a 3D designer, modeler, musician, composer.

I started working in 3D many years ago as a hobbydoing plastic models for myself. I started to make a lot of bio designs and envision futuristic possibilities beyond the traditional Sci-Fi movies, when I first saw 3D designs made inside the computer, I investigated the Internet and found a lot of 3D programs for free and started experimenting. It provided me with the proper environment to create what I had imagine much more efficiently. I never studied 3D graphics, it is a natural ability that I had as long as I can remember.

Getting into 3D graphics was accidental, I was looking for a job on the Internet in graphics sphere, and found an ad for a job that required AutoCAD. Since I didn’t know anything about AutoCAD, I searched through the Internet and found about free 3D programs, so I started by downloading them and experimenting. A few years later, I was able to do anything I could imagine with the computer.

What kind of research process do you have?

I simply go to the Internet and see many renders that people create and see what part of those renders are common. Furthermore, if there is any available source to obtain those parts, I look if there is any model available. It can help me accomplish a picture like that. I keep many factors in mind, like price, complexity and format.

How do you market your products? Can you share some tips & tricks?

Well, you need all forms of promotion. One thing to keep in mind is price - you need to give away some products to show the quality of your product, use all social media for promotion, but mostly your client is your most valuable source.

What do you enjoy most about working in 3D industry?

The personal challenge in obtaining the final form of the concept that you are looking for. You have to create small little goals to achieve the final form of your project.

What’s the hardest thing being a professional 3D designer?

Time. Every project has its own particular challenges and also your computer capabilities.

Please finish the following sentences (being as honest as you can)

My greatest inspiration is … Difficult to say, inspiration is not based on an object or person, it simply comes and goes, I compare it to music. Composing is something too abstract to be measured. Inspiration is an abstract concept and doesn't have a form. It gets formed as I go.

I abandon some of my works because … I never abandon work, I can make a model and if I don’t like it I put it on hold, sometimes it serves as a template for other models or as an inspiration.A fantasy world you haven't seen before: interview with Herminio Nieves 5

When I catch myself procrastinating, I … I do not do that, when I start a project, I work form beginning to the end without considering time! Normally, a model can take me between 4-7 hours with breaks, and during the breaks I’m still designing geometric possibilities or modifications in my head. I’m working 100% because I enjoy it, it is fun and I do not see it as work.

I take a break from my work when … When the inspiration gets shut, I feel sleepy, or it is too late time wise.

I'm most productive when … When I feel the inspiration to do so. My work becomes like a drug and it is intensively addicting!
