A medieval wagon was a heavy, four-wheeled vehicle constructed from timber and iron, designed for transporting agricultural produce, military supplies, or freight. Unlike modern vehicles, they had no suspension and were drawn by teams of horses, oxen, or mules. Roads were poor, making land transport slow and expensive.Key Features and MechanicsChassis & Wheels: Wagons featured a sturdy, rectangular wooden box. Wheels were made of wood but were heavily reinforced with metal rims. Because suspensions were practically non-existent or limited to late-period leather belts, the ride was notoriously rough.Covered Wagons: Many versions featured a cloth or canvas canopy stretched over curved wooden ribs (called bows), very similar in appearance to the later covered wagons of the American West.Steering & Traction: A pivot or lock mechanism at the front axle allowed the front wheels to turn independently of the rear.
