This is a Portuguese 20 Escudos coin from 1987.The images show both sides of the coin:

On the reverse (right image): The coin displays the Portuguese coat of arms with the national shield, surrounded by the text REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA (Portuguese Republic). The denomination 20 ESCUDOS is prominently featured below the shield, and the year 1987 is split on either side of the shield.On the obverse (left image): The design features a stylized compass rose or armillary sphere pattern, which is a traditional Portuguese symbol representing the nation's maritime exploration history and discoveries during the Age of Exploration.

The 20 Escudos was part of Portugal's currency system before the country adopted the Euro in 2002. This nickel-brass coin would have been in regular circulation during the late 1980s and 1990s. The armillary sphere design reflects Portugal's proud seafaring heritage as one of the pioneering nations in global maritime exploration.
