Historical description of the coin: This is a Portuguese 50 Escudos coin from 1987.On the obverse (left side in the image), there is the coat of arms of Portugal, the denomination 50 ESCUDOS, and the words REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA (Portuguese Republic) around the edge. The date 1987 is visible between the coat of arms and the denomination. On the reverse (right side), there is a detailed depiction of a Portuguese caravel (sailing ship), which commemorates Portugal's maritime history and the Age of Discovery. The ship is shown with sails unfurled and appears to be on the open sea, with stylized waves visible. The coin has a distinctive heptagonal (seven-sided) shape rather than being perfectly round, which makes it quite recognizable. It's made of a nickel-brass alloy giving it a silver-bronze appearance. The edge appears to be reeded, as can be seen in the side view on the right of the image. This 50 Escudos coin was a standard circulation denomination in Portugal before the country adopted the Euro in 2002. This particular design highlighting Portugal's naval history was part of Portugal's celebration of its maritime heritage.
