DESCRIPTION

Name: Cordaites Ludlowi

Period: Late Carboniferous to the Permian. 323 to 299 million years ago.

Notes: Extinct plant from the late Carboniferous to the Permian Period. Fossil specimens have been found in both drier hinterland regions as well as floodplains and swampy ground. It was more common in brackish, swamp areas, but it is notable for being able to colonise drier regions, a feature absent from many plants of this era. This seed plant had leathery, strap-shaped leaves and is thought to be closely related to conifers (at one time it was thought to be the ancestor of modern conifers, but this is no longer considered the case). Those that grew in swampy areas had a more extended stilt-root system than those that grew in drier areas. Fossils have been found mainly in Europe and Asia, but a more extensive range is evident.

  9. Dying -- 10,878 polygons, 24,249 vertices, 21.38m tall. Just hanging onto life and showing only unhealthy and diseased foliage.
  10. Dead -- 6,308 polygons, 12,286 vertices, 24.94m tall. Showing only bare and broken branches and dead foliage.
  11. Ancient -- 22,235 polygons, 54,284 vertices, 33.74m tall. Very old plant, larger and considerably gnarled.
  12. Young -- 4,462 polygons, 9,301 vertices, 23.12m tall. Smaller plant, fully mature but still growing.
  13. Growing -- 4,006 polygons, 9,560 vertices, 14.79m tall. Plant not yet mature, some half way through its growing cycle.
  14. Immature -- 1,938 polygons, 4,812 vertices, 4.22m tall. Very small and young plant.
  15. Forming -- 1,324 polygons, 3,203 vertices, 2.5m tall. Extremely young and small but taking on its adult shape.
  16. Sapling -- 573 polygons, 1,269 vertices, 1.04m tall. Recently sprouted.
