Tamarind (Tamarindus indica)
Tree, semi-evergreen broadleaf

Origin : Equatorial Africa (from Nigeria to Madagascar)
Environment : woodland savannah (often on termitaria), river forests
Climate : warm to hot (tolerates big heat); frost-intolerant.

Notes :
Native to Africa, Tamarind is spread today all over the Tropics, especially in India (hence the name). Native to humid regions, it tolerates prolonged draught, so you can even find it near deserts! Since the pods (of great food value) are harvested in the dry season, Tamarind is often planted by tropical farmers to minimise the risk of crop failure. It can grow up to 25 mt tall and 12 mt wide, with a lifespan of 200 years. It can produce up to half a ton of pods per year!
