Echinacea Purpurea: Purple ConeflowerEchinacea purpurea, commonly called purple coneflower, is a coarse, rough-hairy, herbaceous perennial that is native to moist prairies, meadows and open woods of the central to southeastern United States- specifically in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Louisiana, and Georgia. It typically grows 2-4 ft tall, with showy daisy-like purple flowers that bloom throughout the summer. Its name Echinacea is derived from Greek, meaning spiny one in reference to sea urnchins which the blooming flowers resemble. Native Americans used the plant to treat many ailments, including wounds, burns, insect bites, toothaches, throat infections, and stomach cramps. Research has shown that the Purple Confelower can stimulate the immune system, and it has recently been implemented into some chemotherapy medications.
