DESCRIPTION

The Phra Maha Monthian residential complex inside boundary walls was constructed by King Rama I and consists of the Chakkraphat Biman Royal Residence, the Debhasatharn Bilas Hall, the Deba-asana Bilai Hall, the Baisal Daksin Hall, and the Amarindra Vinijaya Throne Hall. All the buildings are connected and include the Ho Phra Suralai Biman and the Ho Phra Dhat Monthian.Chakkrphat Biman Hall is built on a north to south axis as the Royal Residence that contains the State Bed Chamber and by tradition is used by all monarchs for at least one night after the Coronation Ceremony.Baisal Daksin Hall is built on an east to west axis and used for private purposes and also as an audience chamber for the Inner Court. The Atha Disa or Octagonal Throne under the Seven-tiered White Umbrella and the Bhadarapitha Throne under the Nine-tiered White Umbrella of State are placed in this Hall which has been used since Rama II as the hall to hold the coronation ceremony.Amarindra Vinijaya Hall is built on a north to south axis and serves as the Throne Hall for the Phra Maha Monthian complex. When Audiences of State are held to mark important occasions such as the First Audience by a fully crowned monarch or the Royal Birthday Anniversary audiences, the Phra Thinang Bhudthan Throne is placed on top of the in situ Throne underneath the Nine-tiered White Umbrella of State to resemble the Meru Mountain of the god Vishnu (Phra Isuan).Debhasatan Pilas Hall and the Debbha-as Pilai Halls to the south of the Chakkraphat Biman Hall of Residence are reserved as chambers for the use of the Queen.Ho Phra Suralai Biman building is on the east side of the Baisal Daksin Hall and is the private chapel of the monarch. A relic of the Buddha and various Buddha images including the Buddha Chaiwat images cast by each reign are deferentially placed on tiered gilt-wood altars.Ho Phra Dhat Monthian building is on the west side of the Baisal Daksin Hall and enshrines small royal reliquary urns of the father of Rama I, Rama I, Rama II, Rama III, the queens of Rama I and Rama II as well as other senior family members.
