DESCRIPTION

This kit is intended for adding passenger railways to city scenes composed of Kit 01 (Kit 01 can be downloaded at https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-models/exterior/cityscape/building-blocks-for-modern-city-scenes-kit01 for free). There are two file formats in this kit: FBX and OBJ. Each format includes six files: three files containing building-block modules, and three files containing examples composed of the modules from this kit and Kit 01. More details are as the following.

(1) Modules in this kit: The file Kit02_Modules01 contains modules of roads, railway tracks, and vehicles (figure 02). Kit02_Modules02 contains a railway station module (figure 03). And Kit02_Modules03 contains other building modules (figure 04). The modules are made using SketchUp 8 and then exported to Blender 2.83 for file format conversion and rendering. The converted files still have the original SketchUp material settings, and the rendered appearances of the modules are shown in figures 02~04. Relevant materials are assigned names describing how they should look or what they should look like, such as red_smooth, yellow_rough, concrete, asphalt, ..., etc. The orientation setting is Y forward and Z up.

(2) Assembly Instructions: Regular steps of assembly include copying and pasting, rotating, and moving the modules. The modules are color-coded. A color-coded surface may be attached to a surface with the same color or a white surface (figure 05). The material names of the color-coded surfaces are color_code_00, color_code_01, ..., etc. Each file containing modules also contains a color code palette (figure 06). If modules from two different files are to be assembled, it is better to make sure in advance that the two palettes have the same color settings.

(3) Examples: The three examples are composed of modules from this kit and Kit 01. The file Kit02_Example01 shows an example of road and railway networks (figure 07). The road network is similar to those in Kit 01 examples. And the railway tracks are either elevated or lowered to avoid interferences with the ground traffic. Kit02_Example02 shows road and railway networks and a railway station (figure 10). The design of the railway station assumes that railways roughly form a rectangular network, and each major railway station locates at an intersection of two perpendicular railways. Adding buildings, trees, and vehicles to Kit02_Example02 results in Kit02_Example03 (figure 11). Using additional material settings, the rendered results of this example are shown in figures 12~25, but the additional material settings are not included in this kit. The tris number of Kit02_Example03 is 894,871. In the rendered figures, the red trains are long-distance trains, and the blue trains are commuter trains.

(4) Versions: This is the first version of this kit and was published on 2021/08/31.

FBX
This FBX file has successfully passed the CGT Standard technical and visual checks. The verification results are detailed in the section below.
File & scene
Binary FBX
Binary FBX file is more compact and faster to load and process.

No unsupported objects
Unsupported objects:
- Lights
- Cameras
Learn more
Geometry
No N-gons
N-gons are polygons with five or more sides which might cause issues in certain processes like rendering or animation. Learn more
No faceted geometry
Faceted geometry uses flat surfaces without smoothing, which can look unrealistic on curves.
Learn more
Manifold geometry
Manifold geometry ensures all surfaces are properly connected, avoiding issues like edges shared by more than two faces.

Textures & material
PBR textures
PBR textures simulate how light interacts with materials, making the model look realistic under different lighting.
Required PBR textures:
- Base Color
- Roughness
- Metalness
- Normal
Learn more
No embed textures
Embedded textures are stored inside the model file, increasing its size and sometimes causing compatibility issues.
Learn more
Square textures
Texture aspect ratio is the width-to-height ratio of a texture. Expected texture aspect ratio: 1:1
Learn more
Power of 2 texture sizes
Textures with dimensions in power of two (e.g. 512x512px, 1024x1024px) are used to optimize performance and memory usage.

Assigned materials
Materials are applied to the 3D model to allow visualize a model's surface properties and appearance.
Learn more
UVs & naming
No UV overlaps
UVs overlap when multiple points on the 3D model's surface are mapped to the same point on the UV island causing texture stretching.
Learn more
UV unwrapped model
A UV unwrapped model means its 3D surface is flattened into 2D space, allowing textures to be applied accurately.
