DESCRIPTION

This kit is the first of a series. And the series of building block kits are intended for constructing modern city scenes for animation and VR applications. Moreover, the design of these kits includes the author's imagination about a safe, orderly, and efficient city environment.

This first kit is about road networks and buildings. There are two file formats in this kit: FBX and OBJ. And each format includes five files: two files containing building block modules, and three files containing examples composed of the modules. More details are as the following.

(1) Modules in This Kit: The file Kit01_Modules01 contains modules of roads, rapid transit tracks, and vehicles (figure 02). And Kit01_Modules02 contains building modules (figure 03). The modules are made using SketchUp 8 and then exported to Blender 2.83 for file format conversion and rendering. The converted files still have the original SketchUp material settings, and the rendered appearances of the modules are shown in figures 02 and 03. Relevant materials are assigned names describing how they should look or what they should look like, such as red_smooth, yellow_rough, concrete, asphalt, ..., etc. The orientation setting is Y forward and Z up.

(2) Assembly Instructions: Regular steps of assembly include copying and pasting, rotating, and moving the modules. The modules are color-coded. A color-coded surface may be attached to a surface with the same color or a white surface (figures 04 and 05). Building modules can be inserted into the spaces between roads (figure 08). The material names of the color-coded surfaces are color_code_00, color_code_01, ..., etc. Each file containing modules also contains a color code palette (figure 09). If modules from two different files are to be assembled, it is better to make sure in advance that the two palettes have the same color settings.

(3) Examples: The files Kit01_Example01, Kit01_Example02, and Kit01_Example03 are examples of road networks composed of the modules in this kit. Kit01_Example01 shows an area about 1km*1km in size, surrounded by four major roads, and with secondary roads inside (figure 10). The major roads connect this area with other parts of the city, and the secondary roads connect the major roads with the buildings inside this area. The major roads are integrated with a rapid transit system, and every crossroad of two major roads also serves as a rapid transit station. Kit01_Example02 has a similar structure but is smaller (figure 11). Adding buildings and trees to Kit01_Example02 results in Kit01_Example03 (figure 12). Using additional material settings, the rendered results of this example are shown in figures 14~24, but the additional material settings are not included in this kit. The tris number of Kit01_Example03 is 413,906.

(4) Versions: The first version of this kit was published on 2021/01/22. The tris numbers of the first version were reduced, and the resulting second version was published on 2021/05/10. The shapes of the major road modules of the second version were modified to better accommodate curves and ramps from future kits. The result is the current version and was published on 2021/08/31.

FBX
This FBX file has successfully passed the CGT Standard technical and visual checks. The verification results are detailed in the section below.
File & scene
Binary FBX
Binary FBX file is more compact and faster to load and process.

No unsupported objects
Unsupported objects:
- Lights
- Cameras
Learn more
Geometry
No N-gons
N-gons are polygons with five or more sides which might cause issues in certain processes like rendering or animation. Learn more
No faceted geometry
Faceted geometry uses flat surfaces without smoothing, which can look unrealistic on curves.
Learn more
Manifold geometry
Manifold geometry ensures all surfaces are properly connected, avoiding issues like edges shared by more than two faces.

Textures & material
PBR textures
PBR textures simulate how light interacts with materials, making the model look realistic under different lighting.
Required PBR textures:
- Base Color
- Roughness
- Metalness
- Normal
Learn more
No embed textures
Embedded textures are stored inside the model file, increasing its size and sometimes causing compatibility issues.
Learn more
Square textures
Texture aspect ratio is the width-to-height ratio of a texture. Expected texture aspect ratio: 1:1
Learn more
Power of 2 texture sizes
Textures with dimensions in power of two (e.g. 512x512px, 1024x1024px) are used to optimize performance and memory usage.
Learn more
Assigned materials
Materials are applied to the 3D model to allow visualize a model's surface properties and appearance.
Learn more
UVs & naming
No UV overlaps
UVs overlap when multiple points on the 3D model's surface are mapped to the same point on the UV island causing texture stretching.
Learn more
UV unwrapped model
A UV unwrapped model means its 3D surface is flattened into 2D space, allowing textures to be applied accurately.
