Description

Triceratops was a remarkable herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 68 to 66 million years ago. Known for its iconic three-horned face, Triceratops had a large bony frill at the back of its head and two long brow horns above its eyes, along with a smaller nose horn. This dinosaur was one of the last and most well-known ceratopsians, reaching lengths of up to 30 feet and weighing around 6 to 12 tons. Its massive, tank-like body was supported by sturdy, columnar legs, allowing it to move through its environment with ease. The beak and shearing teeth of Triceratops were well-adapted for cropping and chewing tough vegetation. The function of its horns and frill is still debated, with theories ranging from defense against predators to display and species recognition. Fossils of Triceratops have been predominantly found in North America, making it one of the most studied and iconic dinosaurs.
