Smile Extreme Gear – CGI-Style Fan Recreation (Sonic Riders Zero Gravity Inspired)
This is a high-quality, fully custom-made CGI recreation of the Smile Extreme Gear inspired by Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. Unlike other gears from the series, Smile never received an official CGI appearance in any cutscenes or promotional renders. This model was created as a passion project to imagine how Smile would look if it had appeared in the same cinematic CGI style used in the game’s pre-rendered scenes and marketing artwork.
The goal of this project was to bridge the gap between in-game design and cinematic presentation — keeping the original shape and identity intact while elevating the surface quality, proportions, and materials to match a high-end CGI aesthetic.
Project Goal
In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, many Extreme Gears have both in-game and CGI versions, with the CGI ones featuring:
Smoother topology
More refined curves
Physically believable materials
Subtle panel separation and lighting response
However, Smile never received this treatment. This model is a fully imagined CGI adaptation, designed to blend seamlessly with other cinematic Extreme Gear recreations.
It’s not a rip or upscale — everything here was built from scratch to respect the original design while enhancing realism and visual fidelity.
Modeling Approach
The entire model was hand-crafted from the ground up, using the in-game Smile as a visual reference while reinterpreting the geometry to fit CGI standards.
Key Modeling Decisions:
Rebuilt topology to support smooth shading and cinematic renders
Refined curves and proportions for a more believable physical form
Clean panel separations to simulate real manufactured parts
Stylized but believable industrial design language
Extra attention was given to:
Seam flow and curvature continuity
Surface tension and smoothing transitions
Subtle asymmetry where needed to avoid a “toy-like” feel
CGI Style Philosophy
Since Smile never had an official CGI appearance, this version was designed to feel authentic to the Zero Gravity CGI universe.
The styling follows these principles:
Glossy, stylized plastics common in Sonic CGI renders
Bright but grounded color tones
Slightly exaggerated curvature for a premium animated look
Soft but defined panel lines
The result is something that feels:
Familiar to fans
Believable as an official render
Compatible with other CGI Sonic fan recreations
Materials & Look Development
The materials were built to emulate the iconic Sonic Riders CGI look:
High-gloss coated body plastic
Subtle roughness variation to avoid flat reflections
Clean, saturated color separation
Reflective metallic accents where appropriate
The surface response is optimized for:
Studio lighting setups
HDRI rendering
Turntable presentations
Stylized cinematic shots
Technical Details
Polygons: 204,752
Vertices: 204,802
This makes the model suitable for:
High-resolution renders
Close-up shots
Promotional artwork
Portfolio presentation
The density was intentionally kept high to preserve smooth curvature and maintain a cinematic silhouette without faceting under strong lighting.
Topology
The mesh was designed with:
Clean edge flow
Consistent smoothing behavior
Subdivision-friendly structure (depending on workflow)
While primarily intended for rendering, the model remains organized and readable for artists who want to:
Study the topology
Modify parts
Retexture or re-shade
Accuracy & Interpretation
Because Smile lacks an official CGI counterpart, some creative interpretation was necessary.
This model aims to:
Stay faithful to the original in-game identity
Match the visual language of CGI Extreme Gears
Feel like a natural “what if it existed” version
It should feel authentic enough that it could sit alongside:
CGI Blue Star-style recreations
Other cinematic Extreme Gear fan projects
Stylized Sonic universe renders
Use Cases
You are free to use this model for:
Personal renders
Fan art and animation
Portfolio work
Non-commercial creative projects
Study/reference purposes
It’s especially ideal for:
Sonic fan cinematics
Extreme Gear showcases
Stylized product-style renders
Why It’s Free
This model is released for free as a contribution to the Sonic fan and 3D art community.

Notes
This is a fan-made recreation, not an official SEGA asset.
Built with love and attention to detail by a Sonic fan and 3D artist.
Designed to visually match CGI Extreme Gear aesthetics.
Final Words
Smile has always been one of the more unique Extreme Gears, and bringing it into a CGI-style form was a really fun challenge. Since it never received a cinematic version, this project was an opportunity to explore what it could have been if it had appeared in Zero Gravity’s pre-rendered scenes.
If you end up using this model in your renders or projects, I’d love to see what you create with it.
Enjoy — and keep riding the wind. :)
