This bronze statue is believed to have been presented at the temple of Thoth in Hermopolis or at one of the many locations dedicated to this deity. The worship of Thoth, the god of knowledge, wisdom, medicine, and writing, was widespread in ancient Egypt. The wooden base accompanying the statue is original.

In the First Millennium Egypt, bronze votives shaped as figurines of deities, humans, and animals were common offerings in temples. This particular piece illustrates a priest positioned before an ibis, the sacred bird of Thoth. The priest is depicted with a shaved head and adorned in a long robe.

The deity Thoth, known to the ancient Egyptians as Djehuty, initially represented the moon but later became linked with writing and knowledge, overseeing scribes and scholars across various fields.

Thoth was already a significant figure during the Old Kingdom, frequently referenced in the Pyramid Texts. In these texts, he is mentioned alongside the sun god Re as one of the two companions traversing the sky, with the gods said to journey on the wings of Thoth across the celestial river.

Unlike the solar disk, it remains unclear whether the moon was venerated as a deity in ancient Egypt; evidence suggests it was more often viewed as a symbol or representation of specific lunar deities.

The most notable of these deities included Horus, Iah, and Thoth, while the lunar disk was also associated with Osiris in his mythology. Furthermore, 14 distinct deities were sometimes linked to the days of the waxing moon, with an equal number associated with the days of the waning moon.

Thoth was revered as the god of wisdom and esoteric knowledge, credited with the invention of writing and the various languages of humanity. As a lunar deity, Thoth served as the deputy to the sun god Ra, mediating between the two adversaries, Horus and Seth, and restoring the estranged Eye of Re to her father.

In his role as the divine healer, Thoth employed his magical abilities to mend the wounded Eye of Horus.
