Osiris, the deity of the deceased, was born as the son and eldest offspring of Geb, the Earth god, and Nut, the sky goddess. His partner and sibling was Isis, the goddess associated with motherhood, magic, fertility, death, healing, and rebirth. During the New Kingdom period, Osiris was revered as the ruler of the underworld, the realm of the Afterlife.

With the assistance of Nepthys, Isis traversed the land, gathering Osiris's scattered body parts, binding them together with linen wrappings.
