Pharaoh, the vernacular term commonly used to refer to the monarchs of ancient Egypt, ruled from the First Dynasty until the annexation of Egypt by the Roman Empire in 30 BC. During the New Kingdom, regardless of gender, the ancient Egyptians predominantly referred to their monarchs as king. The earliest confirmed instances of the term pharaoh being used contemporaneously for a ruler were in a letter to Akhenaten or an inscription possibly referring to Thutmose III. In the early dynasties, ancient Egyptian kings held three titles: the Horus, the Sedge and Bee, and the Two Ladies or Nebty name. The Golden Horus, nomen, and prenomen titles were added at a later time.
