Description

Nightwish and Evanescence Angel of Grief Figure

The sculpture on the cover depicts a prostrate and desperate angel woman on a white stone monument. In both covers she is photographed frontally, so much so that they appear practically identical. The subject is actually a tomb statue located in the Piramide non-Catholic cemetery in Rome (the original is the one featured in Nightwish's Once, the one on Evanescence's EPs is one of the many copies made in other parts of the world). The mood of the songs (such as Wish I Had an Angel and My Immortal) has deeply characterized the artwork.

The sculpture of this inconsolable angel is actually called Angel of Grief. The story behind its creation is equally sad. The funeral stone is a masterpiece by the American sculptor William Wetmore Story, who dedicated it to his wife Emelyn, who died on January 7, 1895 before its creation. In fact, her name is written under the angel. Even more heartbreaking is that her husband would follow her only ten months later, on October 7th.
