The St. Bernard or Saint Bernard is a very large working dog breed from the Western Alps in Italy and Switzerland. They were originally bred for rescue work at the Great St Bernard Pass Hospital on the Italian-Swiss border. The hospital, built by and named after the Alpine monk Saint Bernard of Menthon, had its first dogs around 1660 and 1670.
