The lion, scientifically known as Panthera leo, is a large feline belonging to the Panthera genus. It is native to Africa and India. This majestic creature possesses a muscular and broad-chested body, a rounded head with round ears, and a tuft of hair at the tip of its tail. Sexual dimorphism is evident in lions, with adult males being larger in size and sporting a prominent mane. Lions are social animals and form groups called prides. A pride typically consists of a few adult males, related females, and their cubs. Female lions often hunt together, primarily targeting large ungulates. While lions are apex and keystone predators, occasionally scavenging and even hunting humans, they generally do not actively seek out human prey.

The lion's habitat includes grasslands, savannahs, and shrublands. It tends to be more active during the day compared to other wild cats. However, when faced with persecution, lions adapt to being active at night and during twilight. In the past, lions roamed across Africa and Eurasia, ranging from Southeast Europe to India during the Neolithic period. However, their populations have become fragmented, with sub-Saharan Africa and a single population in western India being their main strongholds. Since 1996, lions have been classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to a significant decline in African populations, which have decreased by approximately 43% since the early 1990s. It is crucial to protect designated areas to ensure the survival of lion populations. While the exact reasons for their decline are not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the primary concerns.

The lion holds great significance as an animal symbol in human culture. It has been widely depicted in sculptures, paintings, national flags, and various forms of art, literature, and films. Lions have been kept in menageries since the time of the Roman Empire and have been highly sought-after species for exhibition in zoological gardens worldwide since the late 18th century. Ancient Egypt prominently featured cultural depictions of lions, and similar representations can be found in the historical and current range of lions across various ancient and medieval cultures.
