Description

This bronze cast sculpture, known as the Commemorative Queen Mother Head, depicts Queen Idia, the mother of Oba Esigie, who ruled from 1504 to 1550. Queen Idia was awarded her own palace for her mystical contributions to Benin’s victory over the Igala people. The sculpture portrays her in a naturalistic, nearly life-size form, highlighting her elegant conical hairstyle adorned with a detailed coral bead net. Coral bead strands cascade at her sides and back, complemented by a high coral bead collar. Notable features include two vertical marks on her forehead, originally inset with iron, and four scarification marks above each eye, with beautifully inlaid iron pupils. This sculpture beautifully captures Queen Idia’s regal essence, honoring her significant role in Benin’s history and her remarkable achievements during her son’s reign.
