Commemorative Queen Mother Head This stunning and unique bronze sculpture represents Queen Idia, the esteemed mother of Oba Esigie, who ruled from 1504 to 1550 in the kingdom of Benin. Queen Idia’s extraordinary abilities in securing victory during Benin’s war against the Igala people earned her a palace of her own as a reward. This bronze depiction showcases a lifelike portrayal of Queen Idia, with a conical hairstyle intricately adorned with an openwork coral bead net. Long strands of coral beads elegantly cascade on the sides and back, complemented by a prominent coral bead collar. Noteworthy details include four scarification marks above each eye and beautifully inlaid iron pupils. This exceptional sculpture captures the regal essence of Queen Idia and serves as a commemoration of her pivotal role in Benin’s history and her remarkable achievements during her son’s reign.
