This extremely rare object are intricate bronze sculptures depicting a mother leopard carrying her cub on her head. Positioned on a royal Palis altar, these artworks are attributed to the Oba, the ruler of the historic Benin kingdom, which now forms part of Edo state in present-day Nigeria.
Traditionally placed on altars dedicated to the Ancestors of King Oba, these sets of leopard sculptures played a significant role in the kingdom’s ceremonies. The Kingdom of Benin, in present day Nigeria, stands out among others for presenting zoological representations characterized by remarkable realism. These depictions are often compared to the artistic achievements of Ancient Rome and Greece.
The skillful application of the lost wax casting technique has enabled Edo sculptures to achieve intricate and sophisticated designs.
