Developed from Hiram Maxim's design, it was adopted by the Soviet Union in the early 20th century and produced as the PM M1910 model. This heavy machine gun played a critical role during World War I, the Russian Civil War, and World War II.

The Maxim featured a recoil-operated mechanism and water-cooling system, ensuring sustained fire during prolonged engagements. It was mounted on distinctive wheeled Sokolov carriages, allowing for mobility in rugged terrain.
