DESCRIPTION

The Heckler & Koch MK 23, MK 23 MOD 0, Mark 23 or USSOCOM MARK 23 is a semi-automatic pistol chambered in .45 ACP designed specifically for offensive operations. The USSOCOM MK23 version was supplied paired with a laser designator (LTD) and a silencer. The USSOCOM MK23 was adopted by the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) for special operations units, beating out its closest competitor, the Colt OHWS. Development of the pistol began in 1991 when special operations officials identified the need for a special operations offensive pistol system and began shipping the pistols to special operations units in May 1996.

While the USSOCOM MK23 designation is generally applied to the entire system, it is also used to refer to the pistol only. The laser target and suppressor were developed by Insight Technology and Knight's Armament Company (KAC), respectively. The civilian version of the Mk23 is designated Mark 23.
