Historical Background:The Statue of Liberty (English Statue of Liberty, officially Liberty Enlightening the World, also Lady Liberty; French La Liberté éclairant le monde) is a neoclassical colossal statue near New York, created by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi. Located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, it was inaugurated on October 28, 1886 and is a gift from the French people to the United States. The statue has been part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument since 1924 and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
