The Sculptural Comfort of the CH07 Shell Chair
The CH07 Shell Chair was designed in 1963 by Hans Wegner as an exploration of laminated wood and organic form. When first introduced, the chair was considered unconventional due to its three-legged structure and bold silhouette, but it later became one of Wegner’s most celebrated masterpieces.

Hans Wegner:
Hans Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most influential figures in Danish modern design and a master of chair craftsmanship. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, Wegner developed a deep respect for wood construction and joinery. Over the course of his career, he designed more than 500 chairs, many of which became enduring icons of 20th-century furniture design.
Wegner’s philosophy centered on simplicity, functionality, and structural honesty. He believed that a chair should be beautiful from every angle and that comfort should arise naturally from well-considered proportions and craftsmanship. His most celebrated work, the Wishbone Chair, exemplifies his ability to refine traditional forms into modern expressions.
