Maomao: The main protagonist. She is the daughter of a courtesan and a military officer; however, due to her parents' situation at the time, they did not raise her. She was adopted by her great-uncle Luomen, who taught her about herbs and disease management. She used to work as an apothecary in a small village until one day she was kidnapped and sold to Rii's Inner Palace, where she began working as a court lady. There, she was able to use her keen sense of practicality and insightful knowledge of herbs and illnesses to solve the mysterious problems within the inner court.

Jinshi: A eunuch placed in charge of the inner palace, he often requests Maomao to solve the palace's mysteries in exchange for rare medicines. He finds Maomao's apathy toward him refreshing and amusing. Later, his childish curiosity turns into a one-sided romantic affection. It is later revealed that Jinshi is the son of Lady Ah-Duo and the current Emperor; however, because the Imperial Brother at the time was a higher priority than Ah-Duo's son, she deliberately switched Jinshi with the previous Emperor's son shortly after his birth to ensure his safety.
