A rhinoceros, often referred to as a rhino, belongs to the family Rhinocerotidae and is a member of the odd-toed ungulates. The term rhinoceros is derived from the Ancient Greek words ῥινόκερως (rhinókerōs), meaning 'nose-horned', which is a combination of ῥίς (rhis) meaning 'nose' and κέρας (kéras) meaning 'horn'. There are five extant species of rhinoceros, with two native to Africa and three native to South and Southeast Asia. Additionally, there are numerous extinct species within the superfamily Rhinocerotoidea.
