The giraffe, a massive African hoofed mammal, is a member of the Giraffa genus. It holds the title of being the tallest land-dwelling animal and the largest ruminant on our planet. Conventionally, giraffes were considered to be a single species, Giraffa camelopardalis, with nine subspecies. However, based on recent studies involving mitochondrial and nuclear DNA analysis, along with morphological measurements, researchers have suggested the possibility of classifying them into as many as eight existing species. Additionally, the fossil record reveals the existence of seven other extinct species of Giraffa.
