Atlas is a giant god in Greek mythology, a member of the Titans. He was condemned by Zeus to support the heavens on his shoulders. According to legend, the king of North Africa was a descendant of Atlas. The Atlas Mountains in North Africa are named after him. The vertical tail of the Atlas aircraft is painted with the image of the giant god's shoulders supporting the sky, giving birth to a daughter Maia, the goddess of wind and rain, who has a son with Zeus, the Oracle Hermes, one of the twelve main gods of Olympus.
